Ways to Increase Visitors to Your Site

Once you have your web site set up, you'll probably want to get as many visitors as possible. Here are some ways to get visitors to your site:

1. Get your sites listed in all of the major search engines. The best way to get your site listed in the search engines is to get links from authority sites within your niche. Avoid directory submission services as they are rarely, if ever, worth the money.

2. Write articles that other people can use for free on their sites, provided they put a link back to your site. You can post these articles on your site or submit them to free content reprint sites.

3. Join relevant forums on the topic of your site. Make intelligent and thoughtful posts and put the URL of your site in your profile and in your signature, if the forum rules allow it. Be a genuine contributor to the forums and keep comments about your own site low key. Nobody likes forum spammers.

4. Add comments to other people's guestbooks or blogs with a link back to your site in your signature. Again only comment on blogs and guestbooks where you have a genuine interest in the topic of the other site.

5. Get listed in relevant directories. Do a search for:

your-subject directory

directory your-subject

and related searches to see which directories rank well for your topic. See my section on directory submission tips for more on this topic.

6. Buy advertising on related sites or newsletters.

7. Advertise your site in offline or online classified ads.

8. Put your domain name on your business cards and be sure to keep a supply of cards on hand wherever you go.

9. Trade links with webmasters who have related or complimentary sites.

10. Buy advertising in offline newspapers, magazines or periodicals.

11. Create lots of content. To some degree, getting visitors to your web site is a numbers game. In general, a quality site with 3,000 pages and 5,000 links is likely to get more hits from the search engines and many more visitors than a site with 20 quality pages and 200 links. This is not an absolute because you might be able to get more visitors with the smaller site if the keywords are very popular and you have high search engine rankings. But in general, quantity does count. Having more pages in the search engines increases your chances of getting a referral just like buying more lottery tickets increases your odds of winning the lottery.

12. Add a blog to your site and syndicate the content. Submit your blog to all of the free blog directories.
