Common Terms Used in Web Marketing
Adsense
- Google's contextual advertising program. Publishers enrolled
in Google's program put Adwords ads on their sites. Adsense
is a PPC program (see below) Google then splits the Adwords
revenue with the publishers.
CJ - Commission
Junction. One of the larger affiliate network programs.
EPC -
average earnings per click. If you have a site that makes
$10 from every 20 clicks your average epc is 50 cents.
EPM -
means earnings per thousand page impressions. If you have
a site that gets 2,000 page views a day and it earns $30
a day your EPC is $15.
Expired domain
- a domain where the last owner has let the registration
expire. Many webmasters try to grab expired domains that
already have links pointing to them to have new sites rank
better in the search engines. Some webmasters will try to
use this trick as a way to get legitimate links and referral
traffic to sites containing adult content.
PPL -
pay per lead. Publishers using a PPL program get paid when
a customer fills out a lead form. This type of advertising
arrangement is often used for things like insurance quotes
or newsletter sign-ups.
PPC -
pay per click. In PPC programs, advertisers do not pay any
money to publishers until a web site reader clicks on their
ad.
Publishers
- the person or group who publishes a web site.
Search Engine
Spammer - this actual means something different than
an email spammer. Search engine spammers use tricks to try
to put "unworthy" pages into the search engines.
SERPs
- stands for Search Engine Ranking Positions. If your site
is at position 5 from the top for a specific term, then
you are 5th in the SERPs.
SEO -
search engine optimization. optimizing web sites wo that
they rank high in one or more search engines for specific
search terms.
SEM - search
engine marketing. May cover areas such as SEO, PPC campaign
management, branding and reputation management.
SPAM -
search engine spam is usually defined as low quality sites
with little or no unique content that usually consist largely
of advertising or serve merely as doorway points to other
sites or newsletter sign-ups.
