Disadvantages
of Being a Work at Home Mom
1. Because you
are at home, getting everyone else in the family to pitch
in with chores household may be an issue, especially
if they are used to having a full time stay at home mom
taking care of them.
If this is a
problem for you, it may help to have a chore chart up on
the fridge with everyone's chores set out for the week (Mom,
Dad and kids all listed). One thing that worked for me was
to list all of the household chores in a spreadsheet and
them divide them up among family members based on time available
and ability. I think if you don't manage the transition
properly, it is easy for moms to fall into the trap of working
at home full time on their business and still doing
all of the household chores they did as a stay at home mom.
It may be harder for your family to understand that you
work full-time since you are usually at home like other
moms who don't have a business to run.
2. Not everyone
likes working from home because of a lack of social contact,
at least with other adults. If you are used to being employed
at a regular job and many of your friends are from the workplace,
you may find it difficult to work home alone, or just with
small children around.
3. When you work
for yourself, in the U.S. you have to pay the employer
portion of the social security taxes.
4. You also have
to pay for your own benefits. Health insurance can
be especially expensive if you have to buy your own policy
-- if your family even qualifies for an individual policy.
It can help if a spouse has a full time job with health
insurance and other benefits.
5. There are
no paid vacation days, paid sick days or paid holidays.
6. If you have
very young children, or very active older children, you
may still have to pay for a sitter or childcare in order
to free up enough time to work on your business.
7. You don't
have the security of a regular paycheck.
