Making Money with Adsense

1. Use the Google "heat map" of where users tend to click the most. It does work. It is a good idea to study this map and take it into consideration for Adsense placement when you are designing or redesigning a site.

2. Sometimes you have to make a tradeoff between short term revenue with in-your-face ads and the quality of your site. Often you can make more money in the short term by having "in your face" ads plastered all over your site. However, if this results in less users staying on your site or linking to your site less often, then you may be sacrificing long term and rankings and return visitors in exchange for short term profits. I try to find a balance where the ads visible and yet still somewhat low key and the sites still remain attractive and useful to readers.

3. Every site really is different in terms of where the ads work the best. The only way to know which layouts work best is to test and then test some more. Make sure to give each placement a fair trial. I would recommend testing changes on either a page by page or subset of pages to start out. If your earnings fluctuate by 50% or more from day to day, it may be difficult to determine how well changes are working for you. In this case it may be best to have several tests over a period of time. For example, you might try Adsense layout #1 one for several days, then Adsense layout number #2 for several days, then back to Adsense layout #1 and so on. While a three day test on each layout may not have an obvious answer as to which layout is best because of day to day fluctuations in ads, the average results of several sets over time should provide a more obvious answer.

4. Adlinks - Many people report significantly increased income with adlinks. They don't work on every site, though, so the best way to find out if they will work on your site is to experiment. On one site I added Adlinks and increased my revenues by 400%. Not a bad return for a 30 minute change!

5. Check out where your competitors, especially ones with high rankings, have their Adsense ads for ideas for your site. If they are clever enough to get their sites ranked high, then perhaps they are clever enough to know the best locations for the ads!
